Mediation has actually been around a very long time. When two people can't resolve their differences, a third party helps them to resolve their conflict.
I am a mediator which means that I am a neutral third party. I don't take sides and I don't make decisions. Instead I help people sort through their differences. Specifically, I help people to understand themselves, each other and the conflict itself through a process I call "The Anatomy of a Conflict."
Sometimes I mediate all the issues in a conflict. Other times, I mediate only the more troublesome issues and the parties figure out the rest.
When needed, I refer the parties to outside experts for special help. For example, if they have children, they may need a child specialist to help them decide on custody and visitation issues. The result is much better as it is in the best interest of the whole family. Another important expert is a financial neutral who sorts through the financial information for both of the parties. Saves lots of money, time and grief.
Other mediation services:
Usually people ask me to write up their agreements at the end. As I am an attorney, some people ask me to research legal issues for both of them. I provide legal information, but not legal advice, as I don't represent either party. I mediate in person and sometimes via a conference call. In between times emails save time and money and keep the process going.
Recent training: In August, 2008 I attended a 3 day Elder Mediation training at UC Santa Barbara.
